I went to see the ever-so-amazing Florence and the Machine last night and we were awesomely near the front, which was so good considering that I’m vertically challenged. I haven’t been to a lot of gigs that aren’t heavy metal or symphonic metal or “insert-sub-genre-here” metal and I’ve noticed that this whole…”let’s stick our fucking hands in the air with our fucking smartphones so that the person behind me can only see the artist on stage through my fucking screen instead of in the flesh” culture is really prevalent in ‘mainstream’ shows like this one and it’s really shitting me off. Take the time to actually watch and experience the performance people, this really shouldn’t be about bragging to the rest of the world (see: Internet people that you don’t even know) what they’re missing out on.
I understand this can be seen as hypocritical as this also happens with food at restaurants and fashion happy snaps of things you’ve bought, and I consider myself an offender on both accounts…but none of it has actually lessened the experience of someone else around me. And frankly, in shows like this where people pay a lot of money to enjoy a night out with good music and a good atmosphere, it’s just bloody rude.
Is nothing sacred?
